It would be amazing to go on a shopping spree for your newborn baby, buying all the cute little clothes and accessories without worrying about the price, but for most of us, this isn’t reality!
You might even have had the shock of your life looking at the prices of baby items, from strollers to sleep aids. Do you really need all of this? Quite simply, no. There are so many items on the market that you do not need.
To help you stretch your money further and not clutter your home, here are baby essentials for the mum on a budget!
There is no way getting around this – your baby will need diapers. However, you can be more economical with diapers and instead choose reusable fabric ones. These are quite an investment at first, but they will pay themselves off in no time. You might not get to use them all before your baby outgrows that size!
If you are wanting to go the disposable route, look for specials at supermarkets. You might also be able to save money when buying in bulk. Just do not buy too many of the same size!
There are some great budget-friendly wipes available on the market. Buying bulk also saves money. Be sure to buy gentle, sensitive wipes which will not irritate your baby’s skin, especially for your newborn.
As your baby will have sensitive skin, it is best to keep some diaper cream at home. At first, a barrier cream can be used to prevent rashes, but if your baby develops a rash, you might need to move up to a diaper balm or rash cream to soothe the area.
This is where so many of us spend more money than we should! Here is what to buy for the first 3 months:
- 6 short-sleeve bodysuits
- 6 long-sleeve bodysuits
- 2 winter footed pyjamas
- 2 summer pyjamas
- 2 zipper pyjamas
- Baby swaddle
- 2 beanies
- 6 bibs
- Special occasion outfit
- 6 pairs of socks
- 2 footed pants
- 2 shorts
- 2 jerseys
- Warm jacket
The items you buy will also depend on the climate where you live, as your baby might not get to wear any warm clothes during their first few months or vice versa.
Baby blankets are an essential item, but you do not need too many. Two muslin blankets and one or two warmer blankets are all that you need. With messes and spills, blankets can become dirty quite quickly, so it is a good idea to always have a spare one on hand.
You will not be able to travel anywhere without a car seat. It is so unsafe to even try. While you should never cut corners when purchasing a car seat for your baby, some budget-friendly options provide enough protection and safety, and can last for quite some time.
A baby carrier will make your life so much easier. You do not even need to purchase a stroller if you don’t plan on long walks and if you do not have the space to travel with it or store it. A baby wrap or sling will keep your little one close, and it helps to soothe them as well.
