Wide at the base before curving elegantly to a slim neck, the Retro Vessel 1 by New Zealand brand Formantics has an air of history about it. Maybe it’s the shape, beloved of ancient pottery devotees, or maybe it’s the colour: a warm terracotta-hued clay. Or maybe it’s the way that this object – equal parts vase and sculpture – will look like a work of art when styled in your living room on a coffee table or a shelf. Formantics is an art and ceramics brand based in New Zealand. Founder Susan Christie launched the business in 2016 after previously working in the navy, as a psychologist, as a business consultant – all while studying and raising children. Since graduating from her fine arts degree in 2015, Christie realised her passion for creating pieces that play with colour, shape and form. Each Formantics product is handmade in New Zealand by Christie from the highest quality local materials, and serves as a vibrant and unforgettable ode to the joys of life. Sold individually. Each piece is handmade and therefore unique. Vase measures 29cm in height, 21.5cm in width (at its widest point) and 4.5cm in depth. Raw clay exterior with a glazed interior. Fully waterproof.
